ScanScribe is a research prototype document image editor
that makes it easy to extract, manipulate, and combine sketches,
handwritten notes, whiteboard images, screen snapshots, and
scanned documents.

ScanScribe advances three main ideas:

-document image editing
as opposed to editing formatted text (e.g. MS Word)
or structured graphics (e.g. PowerPoint)

-support for rough documents
rough documents are images less structured than formatted
text, such as handwritten notes, drawings, and figures

-intelligent editing tools
it is easy to select just the content you want, based
on a novel user interface plus automatic analysis
of perceptually salient objects and groupings

ScanScribe is an application of the Perceptual Document
Analysis Area, in the Intelligent Systems Laboratory,
Palo Alto Research Center.
